Southern Indiana United’s U12 Thunder caused a lot of noise when it won the United Cup in Louisville last week.
Having breezed through their first three games, coach Mike Campbell’s boys found themselves 3-0 down in the championship decider against hosts United 1996.
However, Thunder performed a stirring second-half comeback to tie the game at 3-3, with the equalizer coming just 30 seconds before the final whistle from an incoming corner kick.
Overtime couldn’t separate the teams and the game went to penalty kicks. SIU goalie Jacob Trulock was the hero of the hour with three saves, while Cody Cotner, Landon Campbell and Kevin Chrisco fired home to ensure the United Cup would be heading back to southern Indiana.
Meanwhile, there was also a great performance by the U14 Net-Surfers Purple team, who made it to the final but lost out on the championship with a narrow 3-2 defeat against United 1996.
The girls play in the Kentucky Select Soccer League Gold division and are currently undefeated.
