The Kentucky State Open Cup preliminary stages in Owensboro this weekend will see many players from the Southern Indiana area in action.
One team in particular, Mockingbird’s U15 boys, includes five: Tyler McGeorge, Parker Davidenkoff and Henok Jones (Floyd Central); Andrew Kennedy (Lanesville); and Grant Hollkamp (Collegiate).
The boys face a tough task to make it to the semifinal and final rounds in Bowling Green on June 2 and 3 as they have been drawn against United 1996 and Lexington FC, last year’s finalists.
Lexington FC in particular will be a major obstacle, as they have won the past two State Cups and are favored to win a third.
However, the team is coming into form at the right time and are sure to give the pair a real challenge. With a lot of turnover from last year’s squad, it took for them to find their rhythm and they lost the first two games of the Midwest Regional League season. However, they have since gone 4-1-1 and currently sit in second place.
Hollkamp is a member of the US Region II team, while McGeorge, Parker and Kennedy were all on the Indiana state Olympic Development Program team last year. Henok, meanwhile, is the team’s leading scorer.
