Surfers edged out in two photo finishes!

It was case of double agony for Net-Surfers as the club was edged out “at the wire” in two tight photo finishes during the weekend’s Derby Cup in Kentucky.

Several of the clubs’ squads travelled to the Thoroughbreds SC/Oldham County YSA event, where the hosts pulled off what they described as a “true soccer miracle” by having the fields ready for action.

And the Net-Surfer girls were ready to show they were in good form, particularly the U14 and U15 teams.

U14 Net-Surfers Purple went undefeated with three wins on the trot without conceding any goals, making it to the championship game against Lakota Gunners.

Having already beaten the Gunners 2-0, Marlon Jones’ girls were in confident mood to bring home the title. However, the game ended 1-1 in rainy conditions and went into two five minute overtimes before moving into a penalty shootout, which they narrowly lost despite keeper Lexie Cole making three saves.

Meanwhile, Dave Carrier’s U15 Net-Surfers had two wins and one loss to also qualify for a championship game.

They took on Sky of Bowling Green at the same time as the U14 final was in progress, and it also ended all square, with neither team able to hit the net after extra time. No fewer than 12 players from each side took a spot kick before the game was finally decided.

It was a great performance by the girls, considering four of their players were in action with the U14s.
