Christian Academy of Indiana won the Class A boys’ sectional 60 against host Providence 2-0 to take its first ever championship this afternoon.
Both goals were scored in the first half, with Chris Smith being accredited with the first after his free kick was deflected and hit the post before finding the Pioneer net after the half hour mark.
Then striker Justin Baird doubled the Warriors lead when he was put through by Matt Hurtgen to score past keeper Aaorn Burns with three minutes to go to the half.
In the second half, it was all Providence but they couldn’t find the net, thanks to a resolute CAI defense. Standouts included keeper Tyler Stumler, Josh Moore and his brother, the versatile Caleb Moore, who played the first half in attack but put in an impressive second half display at the back.
CAI now faces No. 16 Lawrenceburg (13-4-1) at Switzerland County on Thursday (7 p.m.). A win in that matchup would see them through to the regional final, where they would face Salem – winners of the Charlestown Sectional — or Shawe Memorial on Saturday, also at 7 p.m.
In the Class 2A sectional 30 at Floyd Central, Jasper won out against New Albany 2-1 in overtime after the teams were deadlocked 1-1 in regulation.
The Wildcats will now play the winner of this evening’s game between Castle and Evansville North at the regional championships in Washington on Thursday (5 p.m.).
