Providence was not the only area team in action at the Evansville Class A semistate on Saturday.
We also had a squad of referees chosen to officiate at the tournament, and a pretty good job they did too.
They included Kevin Harpring (Charlestown), Teresa Knear-Bell (Jeffersonville), Scott Lowe (Jeffersonville) and Bob Snook (Floyds Knobs).
Harpring and Knear-Bell officiated the girls’ games, while Snook and Lowe were assigned to the boys’ matches, where Evansville Mater Dei ensured that at least one of the Wildcats’ sides made it to a state final.
The experienced Harpring and Snook have been chosen for previous state finals tournaments, but this was the first semistate event for Knear-Bell, well known in local soccer circles for her tireless work, and Lowe, a math teacher at Jeffersonville High School.
Organizers described the eight team crew – which also included Jerry Caldwell, Marc Christle, Dave Howard and Charlie Roland — as the “most lively” they’ve ever had at the venue.
