Borden’s Grant Hollkamp has just returned from a week-long trip to Costa Rica that he described as “the best ever” in his short soccer career to date.

Hollkamp was co-captain of the Olympic Development Program’s Midwest Region II ‘97 team, which traveled to the Central American country to play four games against local opposition in San Jose and San Carlos.

They beat Alajuela (2-1) and San Carlos (3-2), tied against Belin (1-1), and lost narrowly 1-0 to Saprissa on a penalty kick.

“The chance to go to another country for a week was a great experience—one I’ll always remember,” said Hollkamp.

The Costa Rican teams have a tradition where their players and coaches select a man-of-the-match from the opposition team. Hollkamp, a holding midfielder, was selected three-out-of -four times.

The players also got to go zip-lining through the rain forest, visited some historic landmarks and spent a morning at a preschool for under-privileged children.

This is the second consecutive year that Hollkamp, currently playing his club soccer with Mockingbird, has been named on the ODP Region II team, which comprises the finest players from 14 states.

Adrian Parrish, the Kentucky Youth Soccer director of coaching, was also on the trip as one of the Region II coaches.
